Of Flying Cars and Longevity
In a blog post, CMP colleague Mike Elgan skewers The Myth Of The 'Flying Car'. Among the scientists he identifies as working on 'flying cars' is Dr. Paul Moeller, whom I interviewed back in 2001 for Ziff Davis Smart Business (a bit too credulously, I might add).
On his Web site, Dr. Moeller tells of facing the fact that he probably won't live long enough to see his quixotic Skycar widely deployed and that that led him to investigate life extension.
As president of Moller International I eventually had to face the fact that the Skycar was going to take much longer to develop than I had expected. As a result, I joked that I became interested in life extension in order to be around when Skycars became a personalized mass transportation system. During my life extension research I became aware of the enormous health benefits of almonds and particularly almond butter, which keeps much better. Unfortunately, almond growers, like other non-organic nut growers use fungicides, pesticides and herbicides on almonds during the growing season and highly toxic chemicals in the storage area afterwards. After studying the process of making almond butter I found out that almond butter, organic or otherwise is generally made from almond remnants or bulk producing varieties. This sounded to me like a poor recipe for what could be a premium product. I decided to create my own organic almond butter from the most flavorful varieties of whole almonds which I grow myself (tastes like peanut butter only much better). Almonds are purported to provide a number of immediate health benefits as well as life extension attributes.
Moeller elaborates on his belief in almond-based longevity on the Quail Oaks Ranch Web site, where his almond butter is sold. He cites Edgar Cayce, ostensibly a famous psychic of yore, as a supporter of the curative power of almonds. (Cayce died in 1945 at the age of 67, which hardly suggests that almonds had a significant impact on his life span.)
There may indeed be some benefit to eating organic almond butter. Certainly, the absence of pesticides is a selling point, not to mention taste -- almond butter buyers on eBay seem quite content. Even so, his apparent belief in nutty longevity makes me wonder about the science behind his Skycar.
I plan to pursue life extension by sticking with ground-based transportation.
