The Coming Bomb Shelter Boom
Over at the Secrecy News blog, Steven Aftergood points out a study by the Defense Science Board that finds "the U.S. military faces an erosion of the skills that it needs to develop and maintain strategic nuclear and non-nuclear strike forces."
Talk about timing: North Korea said today that it had the ability to launch a pre-emptive strike on the U.S. And last month, the hands of the Doomsday Clock were advanced to seven minutes to midnight. The clock now shows the same time as it did when it debuted 55 years ago.
But what, you ask, does this mean for me, protected by duck-and-cover drills and a sturdy desk? No more jokes about Kim Jong Il's hair.
