Belly of the Leased

St. Louis resident Asia Francis auctioned the rights to advertise on her pregnant belly for $1000 to a California Internet company. The winning company, not named in the AP report on this story, now has the opportunity to place a temporary tattoo on Francis's abdomen and to broadcast the birth of her daughter, due soon, on the Internet. It would be only fitting if the winning bidder were "MySpace."
The AP notes that human billboards are nothing new. Andrew Fischer of Omaha, Neb., earned over $37,000 last year for carrying a corporate logo on his forehead for a month. Michele Hutchison of Lanhorne, Pa., asked $1000 a month for the right to advertise on her baby's clothing on eBay last year. The wording of the news story suggests that she didn't actually get that amount, which wouldn't be a surprise given that Baby Gap already advertises on infant clothing.
It appears no shameless deed goes uncopied. A northern California woman recently attempted to auction the right to advertise on her belly for $2000. She promised, "In return for your payment, I will show off your ad whenever in public. " Thankfully, it appears she won't be baring her midriff for unsuspecting shoppers any time soon — no one bid for her ad space. Perhaps she didn't advertise her auction sufficiently.
