Wire Tapping Falls on Deaf Ears
Speaking at the U.S. University Presidents Summit on International Education, President Bush yesterday bemoaned the lack of intelligence translators of Arabic, Farsi, and Urdu. Evidently, communication problems in the Middle East have led some to resort to bombs to make themselves heard. "We're going to teach our kids how to speak important languages," Bush insisted. Noting that those who speak "Texan" in his presence send a signal that they appreciate his culture, he suggested that Americans would do well to show similar respect to foreign customs by speaking local languages.
As the Washington Post puts it, "The U.S. government has found itself critically short of troops, diplomats and intelligence analysts skilled in the languages of the places where much of the battle is taking place." The lesson here is that we should be invading countries that are both oil-rich and English-speaking, like Canada.
