Computer Measures Political Spin

Canadian researchers are using a new computer algorithm to measure political spin -- politely defined as “text or speech where the apparent meaning is not the true belief of the person saying or writing it,” according to the algorithm’s developer, David Skillicorn, a professor at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. Applied to the recent campaign speeches of politicians running in Canada's upcoming election, the algorithm finds that Liberal Party Prime Minister Paul Martin spins his speeches dramatically more than Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper or Jack Layton, who heads the New Democratic Party.
