Brain Scans Reveal Men Delight in Revenge

U.K. researchers have found that men derive more pleasure than women in seeing punishment exacted on those they believe have wronged them.

With the help of a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner, Tania Singer of University College London and fellow scientists analyzed the brain patterns of 32 volunteers who received electric shocks following a game called the Prisoner's Dilemma.

The brain scans showed a difference in activity when observers saw a shock administered to those who betrayed them during the game compared to those who aided them. The results suggested that men enjoyed seeing physical payback for perceived slights more than women.
