Turkey Trials
Construction workers in Eugene, Ore. managed to incinerate a house they'd just finished building when they tried to cook an early Thanksgiving dinner using a deep fryer. If only they'd heeded the warning of John Drengenberg, consumer affairs manager at Underwriters Laboratories. "We're worried by the increasing reports of fires related with turkey fryer use," he says on the UL website. "Based on our test findings, the fryers used to produce those great-tasting birds are not worth the risks." This MPEG movie of a deep-fryer conflagration drives that point home.
One person who needs no convincing is Cathernie Zeta-Jones, who's reportedly terrified of turkeys. A reasonable concern perhaps, given the coverage of bird flu in the press. Most Americans, however, aren't letting predictions of a global pandemic influence their turkey consumption. That may be because we'll soon be able to retreat to the safety and comfort deep space, albeit without deep fryers, for Thanksgiving. No suck luck for turkeys, however. About the best they can hope for is a White House pardon and a trip to Disneyland.
