Microsoft Aims to Patent RFID Tracking Device
Microsoft has applied to patent what it calls a finding location and ranging explorer. It's an RFID-based tracking and access-control system that communicates the owner's presence to various networked peripherals.
As described in the patent application, this system could be used to put a PC to sleep if the user walks away from it or power it up when the user approaches. It could also be used to grant or limit access to other devices such as telephones. "If a user is in the room, and his RFID tag identifies him as being authorized, he will have access to use the telephone and computer, for example," the application says. "Unauthorized persons will be prevented from using these devices (i.e., locked out)."
