Microsoft's Ballmer Vows to Bury Google CEO Eric Schmidt
Former Microsoft engineer Mark Lucovsky testified in court documents that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer vowed to bury Google CEO Eric Schmidt and kill the search company, according to CNET's News.com. But the engineer's testimony has been called into doubt, not only by Ballmer, but by experts who contend that Lucovsky was not lucid when he tried to vocalize the characters "f***."
CNET's account of Lucovsky's testimony includes this quote, which Lucovsky attributes to Ballmer: "I'm going to f***ing bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to f***ing kill Google."
Microsoft's defenders argue that Lucovsky's insistence that Ballmer tried to say a word with no vowels and three unpronounceable symbols demonstrates that the turncoat engineer -- Lucovsky now works for Google -- is delusional.
However, John Battelle's Seachblog offers a slightly clearer account of the incident, backed by an image of the relevant passage from the actual court document. His blog post even goes so far as to reveal the hidden meaning behind the engineer's mysterious utterances.
A side-by-side comparison:
CNET: "At that point, Mr. Ballmer picked up a chair and threw it across the room hitting a table in his office," Lucovosky recounted, adding that Ballmer then launched into a tirade about Google CEO Eric Schmidt. "I'm going to f***ing bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to f***ing kill Google." Schmidt previously worked for Sun Microsystems and was the CEO of Novell.
Searchblog: At that point, Mr. Ballmer picked up a chair and threw it across the room hitting a table in his office. Mr. Ballmer then said: "Fucking Eric Schmidt is a fucking pussy. I'm going to fucking bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to fucking kill Google."
Maybe CNET's transcript got smudged? In any event, since Microsoft usually pre-announces its plans several years in advance, Schmidt probably has until 2007 or so before he has to have his home address removed from the Google search index.
