Ultra-Small Nanotechnology Needs Regulation-Report
"Most nanotechnologies pose no new risks to health safety or the environment, but we believe research and regulation is required immediately to address uncertainties about the effects of manufactured nanoparticles and nanotubes," Professor Ann Dowling, of the University of Cambridge, told a news conference.
Translation: Some nanotechnologies pose new risks to health safety or the environment, and we believe research and regulation is required immediately to address uncertainties about the effects of manufactured nanoparticles and nanotubes.
From we're-gonna-die chapter of the report:
Until more is known about environmental impacts of nanoparticles and nanotubes, we recommend that the release of manufactured nanoparticles and nanotubes into the environment be avoided as far as possible.
Curiously, a number of scientific publications play up the most-are-not-harmful side of things. Most people (approximately 90-95%) do not die of pneumonia. It is, nonetheless, a cause for concern.
