Conversation With a Spammer
In the course of reporting Spam Nation for InformationWeek, I had an interesting conversation.
Alerted by unsolicited commercial E-mail to the possibility that "what you don't know can make you rich and change your life," I called the company listed in the message, Qcsbs-America, to find out more.
I explained to the gentleman who answered that I was a journalist pursuing a story about spam. "We're not doing spam," he replied with a heavy accent. I asked him about the E-mail with his phone number. "We don't send out any E-mail," he insisted. I asked him his name for attribution. "There's no need for my name. We don't have any comment to make," he said before hanging up.
I called back. Again he declined to explain the spam with his phone number. Before hanging up, he offered only, "Spamming doesn't work. We don't recommend it."
