Biting Back
WASHINGTON (NOT) - Following the announcement that a Boston team had found a way to grow new teeth in the lab, there's speculation inside the Beltway that the discovery could help put teeth in laws aimed at making corporate America more accountable.
Though Bush administration officials continue to insist that they're serious about punishing their biggest donors, the alert and coherent around the country have their doubts.
"Corporate accountability?" said Randall C. Durnham, a New York stock broker, before bursting into laughter. "I've paid my protection money and I'm all lawyered up. Do your worst."
Such cynicism has prompted several lawmakers to visit the Forsyth Institute to find out about possible legislative applications for the new dental technology. Among the possibilies being explored: effective international sanctions and intellectual property laws.
